Listen for the following takeaways from the Show:

  • Empty Nest Syndrome is the process parents go through during that transition of children leaving the house.
  • There are more multi-generational households right now.
  • As the kids get older – Their freedoms go up, and the parent’s control goes down.
  • Encouragement and Compassion are important as the kids grow.
  • What role does a parent fill as the children get more freedom?
  • Empty nest is also when you go from providing to supporting.
  • Even with all the freedom they now have, it is still critical to make sure that you are still there for them.
  • When a child leaves, do you close the door on them coming back to the house?
  • Suggest planning for this transition as late as 16 years old or sooner.
  • Letting go is the biggest struggle for the parents.
  • Where does a parent step in to help when their child struggles, especially when it comes to needing money.
  • After the kids leave, you need to avoid negative coping when dealing with the reality of their freedom.
  • Each parent should give themselves and the other grace when working through the change.
  • When is the time that you push your kids forward?
  • When is the time that you allow them to come back for a life reset?

  1. Oh I went through that this year with Will..it was tough! But he is coming back around and we are starting on a new path. Me trying not to tell him what to do, but always be here for him.
Now I need to figure out who I am again and reinvent myself. Doing it. Slowly
