What Helps to make Therapy Successful or Productive – Ep154

In this episode Chris sits down with fellow therapist Kasie to talk about what makes therapy work. They start by talking about what you should do when considering therapy and how you should pick your therapist. What you need to do once you commit to the sessions and what the therapist should do as well. Therapy is not a one-sided relationship, both parties need to be actively involved to make the changes that the patient needs.

Listen for the following takeaways from the Show:

  • At one point the average therapy sessions someone would go through as only 3.
  • Chris would like to see a change where a therapist is just as regular as a family physician with routine check ups.
  • The goal is to see where a person begins, help them find where they want to go, and guide them on how to get there.
  • When a person is actively engaged they changes happen, but that is not the normal situation.
  • 1° degree can make a huge difference.
  • Take your time by researching your possible therapist and be a consumer by “returning” them if it is not working.
  • There are two ways to look at therapy – illness based (fixing a problem) or wellness based (focus on positive goals).
  • There has to be an authentic relationship or rapport.
  • There needs to be a confidential safe space.
  • Utilize humor to help heal and de-escalate the tension.
  • There therapist needs to be active in the session too.
  • HOW – Honesty, Open, and Willing.
  • Setting and managing expectations for the sessions and for each other.
  • There needs to be a semblance of hope in going through therapy.
